Your Questions

  • What is ear wax and how do I know if I've got it?

Ear wax is perfectly normal and is produced to form a protective coating over the skin in the ear canal. Ears are normally self-cleaning – However, if your body produces too much earwax, you may experience problems with your hearing. If this happens, it’s important to get it checked out right away to prevent further issues to your ear health.

Symptoms could be hearing loss, earache or a feeling that your ears are blocked,
Itchiness, in or around the ear,
ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus), Vertigo (feeling dizzy and sick), recurrent ear infections.

If you think you have a build-up of ear wax, please DO NOT try to clean your ears with cotton wool buds. This can make things worse as you may push the wax deeper inside. It may also cause an ear infection.

Remember, you should put nothing smaller than your elbow in your ears!

  • What will happen at my appointment?

If you could please soften the wax in your ears 4-5 days before your appointment. Over-the-counter drops or an olive oil spray works well.
It’s important that the wax is soft to make the procedure as comfortable and effective as possible.

Your wax removal appointment will take approximately 30 minutes.
After asking a few questions to get a better understanding of the health of your ears, I will examine your ear canals and ear drums by using an otoscope (magnifier with a light). This information is recorded to help keep track of any changes in your ear over time.
I will then discuss with you the best way to proceed and talk you through the procedure, showing you the equipment that will be used and explaining how it works. You must sign a consent form before I can remove any wax from your ears.
Once you are happy to go ahead, I will carry out the agreed procedure to gently remove any wax that’s in your ear.
After the wax has been removed, I will then check the health of your ears and record this information.

  • What methods do you use?

    Microsuction
Microsuction earwax removal uses a vacuum to gently remove any excess wax from your ears. It’s one of the most effective services for cleaning your ears.
    Irrigation
Irrigation is the traditional and most common treatment for ear wax removal, which was formerly known as syringing, but is a great deal different from the ‘old-style’ procedure that you might recall. Modern irrigation methods involve using a pressurised pulse of warm water jets into the ear from an electronic irrigator. As the water is squirted into the ear at a controlled rate, it rinses out the wax which is collected alongside the water in a basin held under the ear. The procedure is gentle, safe and painless.
Irrigation may not be suitable for people who have suffered from ear infections, had any recent operations to the ear or had complications from the procedure in the past. In such instances, Microsuction might be advisable.

FAQ’s

I HAD IRRIGATION, WHAT AFTERCARE DO I NEED?

Following gentle warm water irrigation to clear your ear wax it is important to keep your ear canals dry for 4/5 days to reduce the risk of infection from water-borne bacteria. The irrigation process can slightly dry the canals and strip the area of some of the natural oils secreted from inside the ear. The natural oils should return to normal levels after a few days with no other aftercare needed.

I HAD MICROSUCTION, WHAT AFTERCARE DO I NEED?

After Microsuction there is no need to keep ears dry as the natural oil levels have not been affected, no other precautions or aftercare is required.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REMOVE EAR WAX?

There isn’t a set recommended frequency for earwax removal, as it depends on each individual case. Some people don’t require earwax removal very often, whereas others produce vast amounts of earwax at a faster rate.

WHAT HAPPENS IF EAR WAX IS NOT REMOVED?

If excess ear wax is not removed, it can lead to a build-up of impacted earwax. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of impacted earwax, including ear pain, a ‘full ear’ or a cough, book an appointment.

ARE HOPI EAR CANDLES RECOMMENDED?

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) strongly advises against their use, stating that they are potentially harmful and ineffective in treating any medical condition.  The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned against using ear candling, highlighting that risks are high and that there is “no valid scientific evidence for any medical benefit from their use.”  And an extensive range of respected medical publications and websites, including WebMD and Medical News Today, state that ear candling is unsafe and poses potential health risks to people using them.
